The system has an estimator (2) estimating a torque applied by a driver on a steering wheel from a set of input parameters to prevent failure of a sensor of the torque. An assistance torque developing unit (7) has an output re-looped on the input of the estimator. The unit (7) develops an assistance torque for a power steering from the estimated value of the torque applied on the steering wheel and from another set of parameters.
