A memory card is mounted on a host device and used for data recording. The memory card has a built-in flash memory and in an internal ROM, there is recorded in advance a predetermined write-enabled block size equal to an erase block size unique to the flash memory and multiplied by an integer. A write block size of a write command issued from the host device, i.e., the write data size is detected and compared to the write-enabled block size in the ROM, so as to decide whether the write block size is the write-enabled block size multiplied by an integer, thereby judging whether write is permitted. Only when the write is permitted, data from the host device is written into the flash memory. If it is judged that write is not to be permitted, an error response is returned to the host device.
