<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar light source device and a backlight unit which are released from a question of uneven brightness among discharge channels and exhibits uniform brightness property. <P>SOLUTION: A planar light source device 110 comprises a light source component divided into a plurality of discharge channels 115, 125, 135, 145, and 155, electrodes 119, 129, 139, 149, and 159, which are formed along a second directions intersecting with a first direction where the discharge channels 115, 125, 135, 145, and 155 are extending and apply discharge voltage to them, respectively.
