PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control an economical running function in accordance with the contents of abnormality occurred when abnormality of a vehicle occurs. SOLUTION: This automatic stop and start device 1 for the engine is provided in the vehicle provided with the economical running function for stopping the engine automatically when the conditions for stop are satisfied and starting the engine when the conditions for start are satisfied to reduce amount of consumption of fuel and is provided with an economical running ECU 2 including a detection means, a determining means, and a control means. When the detection means detects abnormality of the function occurred in the vehicle, the determining means determines degree of influence on economical running due to the detected abnormality of the function. Since the control means controls the engine to prevent its automatic stop at stop time when it is determined by the determining means that the degree of influence is large, the economical running function is properly controlled in accordance with the contents of abnormality occurred when abnormality of the vehicle occurs.
