PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for easily producing hydrogen with excellent electrolysis efficiency. SOLUTION: This apparatus for producing hydrogen comprises: a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2; a pair of power feed bodies 3 and 4 with rigidity; separators 5 and 6; pressing means 15 and 16 for pressing the separators 5 and 6 and the power feed bodies 3 and 4 to the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2; and a pressure-contacting face 17, a recess 18, and fluid channels 8 and 10, which are arranged in each of the separators 5 and 6. Hydrogen gas is obtained by passing an electric current to each of the power feed bodies 3 and 4, and electrolyzing water. The separator 5 in a cathode side has a gap (G) in a range of less than original thickness of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2 arranged at least between the surface 3a of the power feed body 3 arranged and the pressure-contacting face 17, which are arranged in the separator 5. The solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2 gets into the gap (G) by taking advantage of its elasticity. The separator 6 in an anode side has another gap (G) in a range of less than original thickness of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2 arranged between the surface 4a of the power feed body 4 and the pressure-contacting face 17, which are arranged in the separator 6.
