PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing a fumaric diester polymer desirable as an optical material having excellent heat resistance and transparency. SOLUTION: The method for producing the fumaric diester polymer comprises performing the suspension polymerization of a fumaric diester or, desirably, a fumaric diester containing a comonomer in the presence of a water-soluble cellulose, desirably a hydroxyalkyl alkyl cellulose, a carboxyalkyl cellulose and/or an alkyl cellulose and an oil-soluble radical polymerization initiator in an aqueous medium and, desirably, washing the fumaric diester polymer particles.
