PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an incremental encoder for accurately measuring the angle of a measuring point, by surely recognizing either of two zero indexes. SOLUTION: The incremental encoder comprises a rotatable disk 2 for forming a main scale 21 as a slit, a first mask 3 and a second mask 4 for shielding and transmitting light by corresponding to the disk, and a first detection means 5 and a second detection means 6 having light-emitting parts 51 and 61, and light-receiving parts 52 and 62. The disk 2 has slit-like zero indexes 22 and 23 formed at two parts of a track that are different from the main scale 21 and one or more exclusive patterns 24 and 25 formed on a track different from the zero indexes that correspond to the zero indexes. The masks 3 and 4 have slits corresponding to the main scale 21, to the two-part zero indexes 22 and 23 and to the exclusive patterns 24 and 25. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
