SYSTEM AND METHODS FOR SURGICAL INSTRUMENT DISABLEMENT VIA IMAGE-GUIDED POSITION FEEDBACK

The present invention, in one aspect, relates to a system for selectively disabling a surgical instrument operating in a surgical site of a region of interest of a living subject, where the surgical instruments has a distal end portion. The present invention can be practiced with respect to several surgical instruments and any combinations of them. As non-limiting examples, the surgical instrument can be a drill, and the distal end portion of the surgical instrument is the tip of the drill. The surgical instrument can be a surgical scalpel, and the distal end portion of the surgical instrument is the cutting portion of the surgical scalpel. The surgical instrument can also be a suction device, and the distal end portion of the surgical instrument is the sucking portion of the suction device. The region of the interest of the living subject may correspond to an ear portion, a mouth portion, a head portion, or other body portions of the living subject.
