PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly and accurately recognize a shape of a steel product such as a stiffener and the like. SOLUTION: A method is provided with; a step of sequentially irradiating a plurality of stiffeners 10 which are mounted on an exclusive pallet 18 so as to be stacked, by using halogen lamps 21 disposed at four corners above them, and photographing them to acquire four photographed images by using a CMOS camera 20 disposed above an approximate center of the exclusive pallet; a step of composing the four photographed images into a single image; a step of generating a distortion compensated image by compensating distortion of the single image; a step of executing a matching process between the distortion compensated image and a plurality of pre-registered master images of the stiffeners mounted on the exclusive pallet and temporarily specifying the uppermost steel product; a step of recognizing a character marked on the temporarily specified steel product and recognizing the shape and the name of the temporarily specified steel product; and a step of determining as to whether or not the steel product whose name and shape are recognized is the uppermost steel product.
