PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary air supply device for an internal combustion engine capable of stably obtaining an effect by introduction of secondary air even when environmental conditions such as atmospheric pressure and outside-air temperature are changed. SOLUTION: The secondary air supply device 30 is equipped with a secondary air passage 32 which leads secondary air to the upstream from an exhaust purifying catalyst 10 of an internal combustion engine 1 and a variable valve timing mechanism 20 which can change valve gear characteristics of at least one of an intake valve 16 and an exhaust valve 17. Besides increasing valve overlap quantities of the intake valve 16 and exhaust valve 17 at the introduction of secondary air, the increased quantity is changed such that the lower the atmospheric pressure and outside-air temperature, the more the increased quantity is increased.
