The fuel system (48) for an internal combustion piston engine, with at least one main fuel injection device (20), and a secondary fuel injection device, has at least one auxiliary fuel injection device (22) within the secondary fuel injection device. The main fuel injection device and the auxiliary fuel injection device are connected to the same fuel supply (36). A separate fuel supply, especially natural gas or hydrogen, may be provided for the auxiliary fuel injection device. An independent claim is included for a method for the running of an internal combustion piston engine, in which fuel from at least one auxiliary fuel injection device is injected into the immediate vicinity of the igniter unit (24).
