摘要 998,175. Carton erecting; filling and closing machines. ANDERSON BROS. MANUFACTURING CO. July 26, 1963 [Aug. 1, 1962], No. 29768/63. Heading B8C. In a machine for erecting flattened cartons X, of the kind shown in Fig. 3, with or without the top flaps e, g, o, and k, the flattened cartons, Fig. 14, are fed one at a time from a magazine by a transfer device to a deflector device which opens the cartons by moving their side walls laterally apart so that the end walls swing relatively thereto, the bottom flaps on the end walls being folded in by a flap guide as the end walls swing. The opened carton then passes on to a platform where it is filled before the remaining bottom flaps and the top flaps are folded in and sealed. Feed of cartons.-The flattened cartons X, Fig. 6, stacked on a platform 44 are urged forward by a feed plate 45 towards a stripper device 53 with a shoulder 54, which removes cartons one at a time from the stack as a slide plate 48, Fig. 1, on which it is mounted reciprocates longitudinally. A second slide plate 49, Fig. 11, parallel with the first and adjustably spaced therefrom reciprocates in unison with the slide plate 48 so that pairs of spring-loaded fingers 55, 56, 57, Fig. 1, thereon advance the cartons intermittently through the machine. After the cartons have been filled on a platform 64, Fig. 3, a transfer device 72 pushes them between the conveyers 74, 75 of a carton compressor unit where they are closed and sealed. Erection of cartons and folding of flaps m and p.-The carton erecting device comprises a shoe assembly 62, Fig. 1, vertically adjustable on racks 41, 42, Fig. 11, and comprising flap guide shoes 81, 82 and 83. Whilst a carton is in the stack a nose 102, Fig. 6, on the shoe 83 contacts the flap m to guide it between shoes 82 and 83 when the carton is advanced. Further noses on shoes 81 and 82 guide flaps p and f so that flap f lies behind shoe 81, and flap p between shoes 81 and 83, and allow flap h to pass in front of shoe 82. The lower edges of the side walls a and b are thus supported on the upper edges of shoes 81 and 82 respectively. The shoe 82 diverges gradually at first from the other shoes to cause the carton to open as in Fig. 6, the flaps p and m being simultaneously folded inwards slightly by the upper edge of shoe 83. At its rear portion 95 the shoe 82 diverges rapidly from the shoe 81 so that the carton opens fully, the flaps p and m undergoing further. folding as the end walls swing relative to the side walls, before these flaps are finally folded horizontal by a plow 84 as the carton passes on to the platform 64. In a second embodiment, Fig. 15, the shoe 83 is replaced by a downwardly inclined plate 143 formed integrally with shoe 82 (142). Folding open of upper flaps k, g, o and e.- A shoe assembly 61, Fig. 1, comprises flap guide shoes 113, 114, Fig. 11, and a plow 128 adjacent a projecting finger 132, Fig. 1. As the carton advances flap e is guided to the rear of shoe 113, flaps k and o between shoes 113 and 114, and flap g in front of the latter shoe. This arrangement prevents the carton rising from the lower assembly 62. As the carton is firstly partially opened the flaps k and o which are inclined by shoe 114 are folded to project forwardly, and in this position the flap k is deflected away from the plow 128 by the finger 132 and so remains folded outwardly. Further opening of the carton as it advances allows the flap o to avoid the finger and be folded open by the plow 128 which maintains it in this position as the carton is filled, the flaps e and g being maintained in the open position during filling by plates 135 and 136, Fig. 1, respectively. In the second embodiment, Fig. 15, only one upper guide shoe 186 is provided for the flap e and a finger 192 on a post 110 helps support the cartons. Folding in flaps h and f and closing the top of the carton.-As the carton advances from the filling station flap h is folded in by guides 65, 66, Figs. 1 and 3, and the flap o turned in by a projection on the transfer device. A guide shoe 69 folds in flaps k and g as the carton advances to the transfer device 72 by which it is inserted between the conveyers 74, 75, thus closing the flaps e and f. The carton may be sealed by applying adhesive to the flaps e and f before closing them, or by coating the flaps with heat or pressure-sensitive adhesive which seals as the carton is compressed between the conveyers 74, 75. Modification for tall cartons.-To prevent buckling of tall cartons during their erection wedge-shaped members 201-204, Fig. 30, are provided, which are spaced to form the corners of a rectangle corresponding in size to the side wall of a carton. The members are positioned to separate the end flaps of the carton to cause initial opening before the carton passes to the guide shoe assemblies. A guide member 205 is also included to maintain the upper end of the carton in its partially open condition. Specification 998,174 is referred to.
