Provided is a high-efficiency two-photon absorbing multi-branched phenylene ethynylene-based compound, which prevents a fluorescence quenching phenomenon caused by aggregation of a pigment, and has excellent light stability and processability in addition to high two-photon absorbing activity. The phenylene ethynylene-based compound is represented by the following formula 1. In the formula 1, D is an electron withdrawing group; B represents -A-D or a mono-substituted or multi-substituted substituent including a C1-C20 alkoxy, C1-C20 alkyl, C6-C20 aryl or C6-C20 aryloxy, wherein A represents a radical represented by the following formula 2; and a is 0 or 1. In the formula 2, each of R1 and R2 independently represents H, a substituted or non-substituted C1-C20 alkoxy or a substituted or non-substituted C6-C20 aryloxy. |
