[Also in Division A1] A sealed housing for a semi-conductor device or other electrical component comprises two parts, each part having a hard metal flange and at least one of the flanges having a coating of soft metal, the two flanges being pressed together to form a solid-phase bond between the soft metal coating and the other flange. The soft metal coating may be applied to both flanges, possibly with a further gasket of soft metal interposed between the flanges, one of the flanges may have a protrusion which is deformed by the sealing pressure, and the soft metal coating may be covered by a frangible metal layer which breaks up during the sealing process. The two flanges may have protrusions which interdigitate. Suggested soft metals include copper, nickel, aluminium, and gold. Specifications 745,426, 745,511 and 997,994 are referred to. |
