PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove foreign matter such as paper powder transferred from a recording material such as a paper sheet to a transfer member and depositing thereon. SOLUTION: A toner band TB is formed on an intermediate transfer belt 20 in a non-image region in the downstream side of an image region corresponding to the final sheet in one job. While the toner band TB on the intermediate transfer belt 20 passes through a secondary transfer nip N, a cleaning bias by superposing a reverse transfer bias on an AC bias is applied between a secondary transfer roll 31 and a backup roll 25. By applying the cleaning bias, paper powder PD (calcium carbonate CC, fiber F) depositing on the secondary transfer roll 31 follows the toner to be transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 20. This method is effective when the secondary transfer roll 31 is made of a foamed body and has a great number of pores 31a on its surface. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
