PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector whose cost is reduced and whose service life is prolonged, while maintaining high quality display. SOLUTION: The projector includes: a light source 810; dichroic mirrors 813 and 814 (color separating means) which separate light from the light source into different color light; liquid crystal light valves 822, 823, and 824 (optical modulating means) for the respective color light which modulate the respective color light; a cross dichroic prism 825 (color composition means) which composites the modulated color light; and a projection lens 826. The number of pixel of the liquid crystal light valve 824 for blue light is made smaller than the numbers of pixels of the liquid crystal light valves 822 and 823 for the other color light.
