The writing instrument has a protective cap (1) fitted with a movable clip (2) which in the extended position (4) locks the cap and in the retracted position (3) releases same through the connector (5), lock (6) and control mechanism (8). In the retracted position the clip lies close to the pen for when using the pen and in the extended position can be clipped over the edge of a garment. The position of the clip can be adjusted through an axially movable top (9) in the cap. The control mechanism which holds the clip in the desired position and also opens and closes the lock acts between the clip and lock.
