The device has a supply device for applying an additional part on a back of a book block provided with adhesive material. A transfer mechanism (13) is provided with two retaining units (14a, 14b) that are phase shiftedly driven together in a cycle. The units are moved between a supply position and the back of the bookblock in different paths (15a, 15b). The units are moved back and forth in a swiveling movement about a common swivel axis, where swiveling radius of one unit at the moment of the meeting of the two units is increased or reduced.
