PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a generation of problem caused by skew and to accurately form a magnetic pole layer by which much magnetic flux can be guided to a medium facing surface. SOLUTION: The magnetic pole layer 16 incorporates: a first portion 16C having an end face located in the medium facing surface 30; and a second portion 16D having a thickness greater than that of the 1st portion 16C. A surface 16C1 of the first portion 16C closer to a substrate 1 is located farther from the substrate 1 than a surface 16D1 of the 2nd portion 16D closer to the substrate 1. A surface 16C2 of the first portion 16C father from the substrate 1 is located closer to the substrate 1 than a surface 16D3 of the second portion 16D father from the substrate 1. At least a portion of the magnetic pole layer 16 is placed in a housing groove 55 formed in a region extending from a first encasing layer 51 through a second housing layer 12 to a nonmagnetic metal layer 13.
