PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector capable of accurately detecting the motion or state of an obstacle in traveling direction change or in high-speed traveling. SOLUTION: The illumination pattern of laser beam within a target area is controlled based on external signals related to traveling direction and traveling speed. In right turn, for example, an illumination pattern for enhancing the illumination frequency of a part closer to the right from the center of the target area is set. In high-speed traveling, a scan locus for enhancing the illumination frequency of the traveling directional center part is set. According to this, detection of an obstacle in traveling direction change and in high-speed traveling can be adequately and smoothly performed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
