PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for soft nitriding whose machining into a desired component shape is facilitated before soft nitriding treatment, and which is suitable as the stock for a component requiring high fatigue strength. SOLUTION: The steel for soft nitriding has a composition containing 0.04 to 0.20% C, 0.05 to 0.50% Si, 0.50 to 1.50% Mn, 0.80 to 1.50% Mo, 0.10 to 0.30% V, 0 to 0.50% Cr, 0 to 0.05% Nb and 0 to 0.050% Al, and the balance Fe with impurities in which the content of N is controlled to≤0.0070% and the content of O is controlled to≤0.0030%. If required, the steel may contain (1) specified quantity of Ti and B, (2) specified quantity of one or more kinds selected from S, Ca and Te, and (3) specified quantity of one or more kinds selected from S, Ca and Te in addition to specified quantity of Ti and B.
