PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor controller capable of preventing loss of synchronism of a stepping motor and excessive noises, and a recorder capable of performing a stable recording operation even if the stepping motor with any type of torque characteristic is used. SOLUTION: This motor controller and the recorder includes a storage device for storing current value setting information prepared according to various torque characteristics of the stepping motor, and having an optimum driving current value of the stepping motor which has the torque characteristic; a count device for counting the value corresponding to a traveling amount of a target in which a driving motor drives using the stepping motor; a measuring device for measuring the value counted by the count device for a predetermined time every passage of the predetermined time to calculate a value obtained through measurement as a value corresponding to fluctuation in the speed of the driving motor; a peak value acquiring device for acquiring a larger value corresponding to the fluctuation, in the speed of the driving motor measured by the measuring device as a peak value of fluctuations in the speed of the driving motor; and a controller for determining the torque characteristic of the driving motor on the basis of the peak value of fluctuations in the speed of the driving motor acquired by the peak value acquiring device, reading out the current value setting information corresponding to the determined torque characteristic from the storage device, and setting the current value setting information so as to use the current value setting information read out when the driving of the driving motor is controlled.
