PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dye forming a preferable associated state such as a lyotropic liquid crystal, etc., in a solution. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the dye represented in general formula (1), for anisotropic dye film. In the formula, X is a skeleton of the dye, n is an integer more than 2, Y is a direct bond, O, S, NH, or NCH<SB>3</SB>, Z is a direct bond, a 1-10C (substituted)alkylene, a (substituted)(-CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O-)<SB>m</SB>, (m is an integer of 1-4), or a (substituted)(-CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O-)<SB>m'</SB>(-CH<SB>2</SB>-)<SB>m''</SB>, (m' and m'' are each an integer of 1-4), Ar<SP>1</SP>and Ar<SP>2</SP>are each independently a (substituted)aromatic group or a (substituted) aromatic heterocyclic group.
