PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protection method of a glass surface in which there is no need for treating with a chemical or the like on a glass surface, the adhesiveness on a glass surface is also good, also there is no transfer of a plasticizer or the like to a glass surface, it is possible to maintain a glass surface in a beautiful condition, and at the time of the use of glass it is possible to easily peel a protective layer by water washing or the like. SOLUTION: The protection method of a glass surface comprises: coating the surface of glass with a polyvinyl alcohol based film, or preferably coating a glass surface with a polyvinyl alcohol based film in the conditions having the water content of 5-50 wt.%; and removing a polyvinyl alcohol based film by water washing, wherein a polyvinyl alcohol based film has the average degree of polymerization of 1,100 or more and the saponification number of 90 mol% or more, wherein a polyvinyl alcohol based film is a biaxially oriented film extended by 1.5-4.5 times lengthwise, 1.5-4.5 times transversely, and wherein the polyvinyl alcohol based film is heat-treated at 150-250°C for from 5 seconds to 2 minutes.
