The engine has a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation system (10) connecting an exhaust gas block with an intake system, where an exhaust gas purification mechanism is arranged in the system. A controller adjusts a throttle valve (38) under throttling of fresh air quantity supplied via the system into the engine, during warm up and/or in light load operation of the engine, to increase the exhaust gas temperature in the block. An independent claim is also included for a method for the operation of the internal combustion engine.
