<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light scattering liquid crystal display device having high luminance and contrast and satisfactory image quality. <P>SOLUTION: In the light scattering liquid crystal display device, a light scattering liquid crystal layer is held between first and second substrates 10 and 20 and columnar spacers 40 maintaining a gap between the substrates at a prescribed interval are disposed between the first and the second substrates 10 and 20.
