PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ballast which has a new structure and carries out dimming by two steady prescribed operation modes. SOLUTION: This is a stepped dimming ballast which comprises a filter/rectifier circuit 1, a DC high voltage stabilizing circuit 2, a frequency control/switching circuit 3, a load current feedback circuit 5, and a voltage signal processing circuit 6, a voltage signal sampling circuit 7. The ballast is adapted so as to be used together with a silicon controlled rectifier dimmer and/or a standard lighting switch, and thereby, the structure is new and it can also carry out dimming with two steady prescribed operation modes.
