PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device avoiding the problem of damage to a lamp caused by a peel-off phenomenon between a glass material such as quartz at a sealing part of a discharge vessel and an electrode material, at lighting in an alternate current of a discharge lamp so set as not to have an auxiliary electrode other than one for main discharge come in contact with a discharge space. SOLUTION: A trigger circuit (Uz) is provided for supplying a pulse current to a primary winding (Pz) of a high-voltage transformer (Tz) having an auto transformer structure for impressing a high voltage on a feeding circuit (Ux), an inverter (Ui), and an auxiliary electrode (Et). At the non-operation state of the trigger circuit (Uz), potentials of trigger terminals (Tz1, Tz2) are so structured to be kept at virtually the same potentials as a low-voltage side output line (UxG) of the feeding circuit (Ux).
