PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control unit capable of maintaining both the control resolution and control accuracy at a high level even when at least one of the nonlinear characteristic and the frequency characteristic of a control target is varied. SOLUTION: The control unit 1 for controlling a cam phase Cain by a phase control input Ucain comprises two controllers 102, 103. In the two-degree-of-freedom response designation type controller 102, a follow-up control input Rsld is calculated as a value for controlling the cam phase so that it follows a target cam phase Cain_cmd. In the DSM controller 103, the phase control input Ucain is calculated by modulating the follow-up control input Rsld and at that time a calculation cycle of the phase control input Ucain is chosen from two calculation cyclesΔT1,ΔT2 according to an engine rotation speed NE, the cam phase Cain and a valve lift Liftin.
