PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data communication protocol in which a client and a server negotiate in such a manner as the client is not required to retry negotiation when the server does not correspond to a protocol desired by the client. SOLUTION: In a data communication protocol used by a client and a server in communication for sharing a file, the client sends a negotiation packet to the server identifying a set of protocol dialects which is understood by the server. That packet has such a format as indicating that a server having a capability of performing communication by a second data communication protocol must use a first data communication protocol without requiring an extra request. When the server has a capability of performing communication by the second data communication protocol, the server responds so. The client calls a driver for processing communication with the server through a corresponding protocol indicated by the server. The second communication protocol is SMB 2.0 or above.
