PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent agent for the treatment of various diseases such as obesity, diabetes and inflammation. SOLUTION: The invention provides a non-steroidal compound acting as a selective modulator of a steroid receptor, specifically, a glucocorticoid receptor (agonist and antagonist) and having phenanthrene ring as a part of the chemical structure. A pharmaceutical composition containing the compound and a treating method for animals are also provided. An example of the compound is [4bS-(4bα,7α,8αβ)]-4b,5,6,7,8,8a,9,10-octahydro-7-hydroxy-4b-(phenylmethyl)-7-(1-propynyl)-N-(4-pyridinylmethyl)-2-phenanthrene carboxamide.
