PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing a hetero-bifunctional oligoethylene glycol characterized in that the number of steps is small and the yield and purity are high. SOLUTION: The method for producing a hetero-bifunctional oligoethylene glycol comprises the following steps: (i) a step of mixing an oligoethylene glycol represented by HO-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>m</SB>-H (wherein, m represents an integer of 1-10) with a substrate having a reactive group and a functional group so that the value of [number of mol of the oligoethylene glycol]/[number of mol of the substrate] is≥5 and converting a first hydroxy group of the oligoethylene glycol into a first functional group without protecting a second hydroxy group of the oligoethylene glycol; and (ii) a step of converting the second hydroxy group of the oligoethylene glycol into a second functional group different from the first functional group.
