<p>A pneumatic exercise device (10) coordinates body conditioning exercises by providing a steady, consistent resistance when the user manipulates an actuated element, such as a handlebar (24) or a leg bar (26). The resistance to muscle flexion is accomplished through a pneumatic pressure chamber (52) which is adapted to maintain a uniform, steady internal air pressure regardless of stroke length or rate of displacement. This is accomplished through a pressure-responsive regulator valve (58) which automatically vents air from the pressure chamber (52) whenever the chamber (52) pressure increases and automatically allows air to be added to the chamber (52) when the internal pressure decreases. A source (38) of pressurized air supplies a continuous flow of new air into the chamber (52). A rotary knob (42) or other control input allows a user to manipulate the pressure setting through the regulator valve (58). The source (38) of pressurized air can either be self-contained in a dedicated pump unit, or piped in from a remote location through a distribution manifold (62), such as may be desired in commercial settings.</p> |
