A backlight assembly and an LCD having the same are provided to increase the outer sectional area of a light source, thereby improving the brightness of the light emitted from the light source, by forming the light source to have a predetermined radius of curvature. A backlight assembly comprises a light guiding plate(142) and a light source(122) disposed at a side surface of the light guiding plate. The light source has a predetermined radius of curvature. The light source corresponds to a fluorescent lamp. The light source has a plurality of gullies and ridges formed on the same plane as the light guiding plate. A plurality of optical sheets are disposed above the light guiding plates, and improve the brightness of the light exiting from the light guiding plate. |
