A method or means of controlling plural directionally diverse antennae 100, 110 in a mobile device which comprises determining the device usage in a particular configuration by its orientation or status and using this to selectively disable one or more of the antennae 100, 110 accordingly. The mobile device may be a laptop PC and a handheld PC. The orientation of a display unit 11 or a handheld unit may be determined from a manually operated rotation button 17 or automatically by an acceleration sensor. A docking port senor may also be used to determine the configuration status. When the configuration of the device has been identified the antenna(s) 100, 110 proximal to a user can be disabled and the remaining antennas within the antenna diversity system may be selected to provide an effective communication link. The control system may be used to reduce the specific absorption rate SAR experienced by the user of such a device. |
