A character input method for providing a visual effect to a character input and a mobile terminal therefor are provided to offer the visual effect for the input character to users who think the mobile terminal as a user's own expression tool to satisfy user's own personality. A memory(130) stores data for each layer-classified display item according to a visual character theme and a plurality of visual character themes, and stores a visual character theme selected by a user as a basic visual character theme. When a character output is requested by a character input through an input window of a mobile terminal, a key input unit(110) provides key input data. A control unit(100) adds a visual effect corresponding to the basic visual character theme previously stored in the memory(130) to a character to be inputted according as the key input data are provided from the key input unit(110), and outputs the visual character to which the visual effect is added on a background provided according to the visual character theme. A display unit(120) overlaps the visual character to the background provided according to the visual character theme, and displays the visual character effect to which the visual effect is added.
