A capacitive encoder for sensing the displacement is provided to output the displacement and position information of a movable member as an encoded digital signal. A movable electrode(11) is formed at a side surface of a movable slider(10). The movable slider is mounted to a side of a movement member in order to obtain the displacement or position. Fixing member electrode arrays with a repetitive stripe pattern type are formed on the surface of a fixing member(20) along the moving direction of the movable slider. Electrode patterns(12,22) are formed at ends of the electrode and electrode arrays. Insulation layers(13,23) are formed on the surfaces of the electrode and electrode arrays in order to perform the electric insulation.
