An apparatus and a method for rubbing an alignment layer of an LCD are provided to uniformly perform a rubbing process and prevent the generation of static electricity between a rubbing cloth and an alignment layer, by rubbing the alignment layer after injecting a liquid on the alignment layer. A rubbing unit rotates in one direction while keeping in contact with a surface of an alignment layer(120) while performing a rubbing process. A liquid injector(110) injects a liquid onto the alignment layer while the rubbing unit rubs the alignment layer. The rubbing unit is composed of a rubbing roller(101), a rubbing cloth(102) attached on the outer circumferential surface of the rubbing roller, a rotary shaft(103) for rotating the rubbing roller, and a rotary motor(104).
