An ice maker for a refrigerator and an ice making method thereof are provided to store a small amount of ice in an ice bank and make ice when the ice is used, thereby preventing the ice from staying in the ice bank and controlling an ice making amount freely. An ice making method of a refrigerator ice maker includes the steps of calculating the number of ice making carried by the ice maker, generating ice by exposing supplied water to chilled air, and withdrawing the generated ice from the ice maker and storing the same in an ice bank in initial ice making mode. The ice making is stopped until an external input for ice making is received if the set number of ice making is carried out after the ice separation is completed, in standby mode(S110). Additional ice making mode is carried out in response to an external input therefor is received during the standby mode(S111,S131,S150).
