A system and a method for automatically selecting important patents are provided to primarily select important analysis targets from a large number of patents with usefulness by mechanically selecting the important patents based on claims of a patent application. A counter counts the number of components forming the claims of the target patent. A controller controls the counter. An independent claim recognizer detects and recognizes the independent claim among the claims. A pattern database includes an electronic dictionary and is connected to the counter. If words used in a sentence of the claims are included in the electronic dictionary, the counter recognizes the word as the component and counts the number of the components.
