A heavy duty pneumatic radial tire having a hook-type steel chafer using metal powder is provided to prevent a carcass of the tire from being separated/injured, to thereby improve durability against impact, and to facilitate emission of heat generated inevitably. A heavy duty pneumatic radial tire comprises an inner liner(1); a back-up liner(2); a carcass(3); a belt layer(4); a tread(5); a side wall(6); a bead(7); and a steel chafer(8) inserted between the back-up liner and the carcass on one end and formed like a hook(8a) on the other end to surround a turn-up end unit(3a) of the carcass over a buffering rubber layer(11) and a soft apex(10b). The steel chafer is made of composite materials containing metal powder and rubber.
