A substrate for a display device and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to increase the storage capacitance of a storage capacitor, thereby improving the operating characteristic of the display device, by forming an opening groove in an insulating layer for the storage capacitor. A thin film transistor and a storage capacitor(160) are formed above a substrate(100). The storage capacitor is composed of a storage electrode(150) formed on the substrate, an insulating layer(110) formed on the storage electrode and the substrate, and a pixel electrode(140) formed on the insulating layer. An opening groove(170) is formed in the insulating layer, and the pixel electrode is inserted into the insulating layer through the opening groove.
