A management character recognition apparatus of a steel specimen and a control method therefor are provided to accurately recognize a specimen management character indicated on a front end part of a thin steel specimen such as a slab, a billet, and a cold-rolled strip. When a specimen exists on a reference position, a specimen detecting sensor(21) outputs a specimen detection signal. A camera housing unit(22) includes a camera and an air spraying device. The air spraying device, formed as a shape in which the camera is surrounded in an external part of the camera, has the same air spraying direction as a photographing direction of the camera. The camera housing unit(22), installed at a front upper side in a conveying direction of a specimen, sprays air to a front end part of the specimen and photographs a front of the specimen. A lighting unit(23), installed at the front upper side of the specimen conveying direction, irradiates light to the front end part of the specimen. An air spray control unit(24) controls the air spray of the camera housing unit(22). A camera driving unit(25) drives the camera of the camera housing unit(22). A lighting driving unit(26) controls the operation of the lighting unit(23). A main control unit(27) controls the entire operation of a steel specimen character recognition apparatus. The main control unit(27) receives an image signal photographed through the camera driving unit(25), digitally processes the received image signal, compares the recognized character with reference information, and discriminates a corresponding specimen management character. A storing unit(28) stores the reference information about the specimen management character.
