A water tank control method for a refrigerator is provided to control operation of a heater at an optimum state according to operation conditions of the refrigerator, thereby preventing freezing of a water tank and reducing power consumption caused by unnecessary heating of the water tank. A water tank control method for a refrigerator includes the steps of setting a reference temperature range for determining operation of a heater which heats a water tank(S111), and detecting an atmospheric temperature(S113). The heater is driven when the sensed atmospheric temperature is lower than reference temperature range(S115,S131). The heater is driven or not according to operation of a compressor if the sensed atmospheric temperature is in the reference temperature range(S117,S119). The heater is stopped operating in the other case(S123,S171).
