To guide a blind equestrian along a path in an arena, sound producing units with loudspeakers A, B, C are positioned around the arena, each unit including a processor that is programmed to produce a unique sound such as a voice message corresponding to the relative position of the unit with respect to the other units and the arena layout. A sighted operator observes the progress of the rider and activates a controller 3 to send a signal to a particular sound producing unit at an appropriate time, the signalled sound producing unit producing the programmed audible signal to be heard by the rider to guide the rider.
