PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool for friction stir welding, which does not involve impurities from the tool into a workpiece and is hard to wear and difficult to break, even when the workpiece made of metal or alloy having a high melting point of not less than 1,600°C is joined by friction stir welding. SOLUTION: The tool for friction stir welding is used to join metals or alloys having a high melting point of not less than 1,600°C, as workpiece, by friction stir welding. At least a portion of the tool which comes in contact with the workpiece has the composition including iridium as a main element and one or more elements of rhenium, ruthenium, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, tantalum, zirconium and hafnium as the auxiliary elements and also has a micro-Vickers hardness of not less than 200 Hv.
