The inverse microscope, giving an image of objects (14) with a rich contrast, has a lens (15) with lens pupils (30-32) followed by lens systems (17,19,22) to give intermediate images (33-35) of the lens pupil, where modulators (24) give contrast. At the intermediate stage, the images are arranged for a number of modulators matching the lens pupils.
