PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a car navigation system which prevents diversion of a disc storage medium for map data update. SOLUTION: The car navigation system 10 comprises an arithmetic processing unit 1, a read/write means 2 for a built-in storage medium M, a disc playback unit 3, and a display unit 4. A read-only updating disc storage medium 6 for storing updating map data Dm is inserted into the disc playback unit 3 and is written to the built-in storage medium M. At updating, a first timer T1 is started, and another insertion of the updating disc storage medium 6 is requested, after the lapse of a predetermined time period t1. When the insertion is detected at a fixed time period t2, after a second timer T2 is started and identification has been confirmed, it is decided that navigation through the map data Dm can be used continuously, allowing the timers T1, T2 to be reset and the timer T1 to be started. When the insertion and the identification are not confirmed, in a fixed time period t2 after the insertion request, the use of the navigation through the map data Dm is restricted.
