PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing hydrogen efficiently by using a strain inactivated with its gene inhibiting the formation of an FHL (formic acid hydrogen lyase) system associated with the production of hydrogen. SOLUTION: This method for producing hydrogen is provided by culturing microorganisms having a formic acid dehydrogenase gene and hydrogenase gene, and inactivated with a gene inhibiting the formation of the FHL system under an aerobic condition, then culturing under an anaerobic condition and bringing the obtained microorganisms into contact with an organic substrate in a reaction solution for the generation of hydrogen under a reduced state to generate hydrogen.
