PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device enabling an HID lamp to start discharge without using igniter transformer, reducing load burdened on a direct current power supply at lighting operation. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is composed of a direct current power supply; a transformer to a middle point of primary side winding of which a voltage of the direct current power supply is supplied; a plurality of switching elements for switching the current at primary side winding supplied from the direct current power supply: a resonance circuit having a capacitor connected to a secondary winding of the transformer in parallel therewith; a control circuit for driving the plurality of switching elements by an optional constant frequency different from a resonance frequency of the resonance circuit at the start of discharge, and afterwards, driving the switching elements with time-division of the resonance frequency and the optional constant frequency different from a resonance frequency; and a booster circuit for boosting the direct current voltage generated between both ends of the capacitor connected to a secondary winding of the transformer in parallel therewith, and impressing the boosted voltage to the discharge lamp.
